Does anyone know which is the most comfortable women dance shoes for ballroom? I got mine and it hurt like crazy after practice. I appreciate for any guidance on brand/style that is comfortable and reduce the bunion pain. Thanks.

Hi Amanda,

Different people will swear by different brands and styles of shoes, since we all have different foot structures/problems, etc. I happen to have long, narrow feet with some wicked bunions, and after trying practically every brand under the sun, I found that Elegance shoes worked the best for me. They didn't used to, years ago, but Ali is constantly bringing out new cuts and fabrics, so eventually, I happened upon a pair that worked wonderfully. If you live in the Southern California area, I would make a trip to the boutique to try on his shoes. It'll be hard to choose shoes online, I imagine.

If you have limited access to shoe distributors in your area, might I recommend that you take whatever shoe you are currently using and give it a good beating. I know that sounds funny, but I saw another girl doing that years ago, and it turns out that ballet dancers break in their shoes by beating them up before ever wearing them. Until I found this most recent pair that is made of a super soft leather that didn't need any breaking in, I was doing that with my Supadance court shoes and found that it was pretty effective. I began by kneading the toe box to break up the structure a bit. Then, beginning with the tip of the toe box, I would roll it up toward the shank, like you would roll a newspaper. Then I would unroll it, and re-roll it, but this time, rolling the tip down and under.

Does that make sense? Sorry, I know that's not exactly a fabulous description. The point is you want to beat up the toe box until it's soft. Then it will conform a bit better to your foot, which is very helpful when dealing with bunions.

By the way, this will reduce the aesthetic life of your shoe. I found that this didn't matter much for me since they look fairly dirty after only a few competitions anyway, and for practice, I didn't care if they looked a bit fuzzy.

I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck. I know how much bunions can suck.

Hi Lorena,
Thank you so much for your response and the wonderful tips on breaking in the shoes. I will try that out. Yes i live in Southern California so I will follow your advice to go to the Elegance shoes boutique soon and will let you know how it turns out for me. Yeah, i don't like buying shoes from the internet because it might not fit me perfectly. Thanks much for your wonderful advice.

Hello! You should try out KSM dance shoes from prodanse.ca. I had bunion pain with my Supadance shoes and I would never go back to them. KSM has a stretchy toe box and provides relief on the toes. Hope this helps!

I just ordered some custom ballroom shoes through the internet. Step One dance shoes in Ohio allows you to return them once if they don't work out with a re-stocking fee and they will mail you shoes to try on if you want. I have wicked bunions myself and made a mistake by ordering double wide to accomodate my bunions but had to return them. I ended up trying a sample medium width 11 in this style (Glide Chrissy Ladies Custom Round Closed-Toe w/T-Strap) which fit and have ordered them in nude leather. The toe box is rounder and kinder to bunions and the T-strap gives extra support. You can order their shoes with all kinds of extras if you want (different colors, removable inserts, different heel sizes/types, rhinestone straps, etc.) Mine cost $122 which is comparable to many shoes they sell at comps. At least this time I know they'll fit. Rose is very helpful at Step One.

I also learned from a friend of mine who used to work at Nordstroms that they have a specific tool to stretch shoes for bunions (it doesn't stretch the whole shoe box, just the bunion area). So if I have any trouble, that's where I'm taking my shoes!

Good luck! Something else to try might be http://www.ballroomgifts.com/FootComfort.html

I haven't tried their jelly pads myself but some people rave about them...
